Dr. Edwin Graves Newell (1861-1928)

Dr. Newell is listed for Moville in 1887. He was born in Dublin and was well qualified. He gained his LRCSI in 1884; MB in Trinity 1885 Lic Midwifery KCQCPI 1885 followed by his MD and DPH 1891 both from TCD.

The Irish Times obituary stated he was “Medical Attendant for the Irish Lights Board and the Royal Irish Constabulary and was surgeon and agent to his Majesty’s coastguard".

He had practiced for over 40 years in Inishowen, where he was "universally beloved”. His death cert stated that he died 30th August 1928 aged 67 from abdominal carcinoma 2 months and exhaustion 6 days. He is buried at St Finians Greencastle, his grave ornamented with a Celtic Cross.

He was married in 1890 at St Columbs Church Moville to Theresa Roasario Lyle , third daughter to Lieut Col Hugh Chatham Lyle of Carnagarriff House Moville, late Royal Artillery and High Sheriff Co. Londonderry(1878). The couple had four children.
