Dr. Thomas Wetherall Sproulle (1821-1886)

Dr. Sproulle was assistant surgeon in Aughnacloy, Co Tyrone in 1854. His qualifications included MRCSE (1841) MD St Andrews (1847) LRCSI (1849). He married Mary McCrea Maginnis in Dublin in 1853 and a son was born in Moville in 1855.

Four children Dorcas Mary aged 2yrs, Marcus Charles 9 yrs, Oliver William 25yrs and Simon Davenport 29 years old predeceased Dr Sproulle. Oliver and Simon were doctors also. Two further sons went on to practice medicine in Mirfield, Yorkshire (Thomas Wetherall) and in Culmore (Hamilton Maginnis). A grandson, Captain Wilfred Sproulle received the Military Cross.

The family lived at the Wilderness, Moville and both the doctor and his wife died within days of each other 16/4/1886 and 22/4/1886. The death certificate stated that Thomas died aged 65 yrs from "inflammation of lungs 5 days duration". Mary McCrea died aged 62 of "pleurisy 6 days duration". The family grave is adjacent to the entrance to St Finians at Greencastle.
